Lie with Me a Little While
66
Many men in my generation were raised on Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris and the Marlboro man. Men that stood alone, did it their own way and always triumphed in the end. Against all odds they braved the perils, vanquished evil and won the girl. All without doubt, all without shedding a tear. This was the model for men for generations. Men that didn't need anybody. Stoic men.
My father was such a man. He was career military. Not an regular officer, mind you, an NCO. The backbone of the service. He was a good man, an honorable man, a proud man. But he never let his doubts or his fears show nor his failures be known. I wish he had. Intentionally or not, he taught me by his example to behave the same way.
But sometimes the world beats the crap out of you. Sometimes it takes more than you have to give and then kicks you to the curb. It's not always fair. Hell, it's not often fair and the good guy doesn't always win. For many men it's not easy to admit but sometimes you can't go it alone. Sometimes you need someone to lean on, to bind your wounds, to soothe your nerves, to ease your mind ... to reassure you. I know sometimes I need someone to ...
Lie with Me a Little While
Lie with me a little while
let me bask here in your smile
Warm my heart, melt the frost
let me know all's not lost
Ease my mind, quell the noise
blanket me with your voice
Sing to me a lover's song
chase away all that's wrong
Soothe my nerves, it won't take much
the healing calm of your touch
Kiss my brow, stroke my hand
renew my strength, help me stand
Still my soul with your eyes
see through my 'brave' disguise
Though oft I fail as a man
tell me, please, that I am
It's not so hard to fight the tide
when you're here by my side
Alone with you the world it fades
its fears and cares all fall away
If I could, I'd always stay
and never would I ever stray

You have a real skill with words Poetic Fool! I have been reading your hubs most of this evening and I am really impressed. You seem to be able to pull things out of real life memories and experiences and express it in words that many people can relate to, quite a gift
Richard your poem is beautiful. Your words are wonderful. This is my favorite poem of the day! Thank you!:)
This poem is beautiful. I hope my husband can turn to me like this.
Beautiful! Tender and touching! Have a blessed day!
Yet another poem here that I love Poetic Fool. Voted up.
Well done my poetic friend. You captured the tenderness, you wrote from your soul and that's what a great poet excels in. Your work is getting better with each scribe you pen. Well done.
Excellent work, very touching and the foreword is very true.
Excellent. In many of my hubs I write about the decline of real men like Eastwood, Norris, and Cowboys. This poem is good for men and women. Great work!
Great poetry, Contains both tenderness and strength, blended very well.
This was absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed it immensely.
Voted up and beautiful. Although guys stand tall and walk tough there's always a softer side. Thank you for sharing.
Your poem is so beautiful and real. Everyone, man and woman needs that safe feeling..Thank you//

Thank you, voting up/beautiful
best wishes MM
Ah that is such a beautiful poem =) It's very romantic and I hope I have a guy that feels that same way with me =)
Absolutely beautiful.
Your prologue is so touching and fitting. My father was very similar and did not like us to be too 'touchy feely' with him. He was a type 'A' personality, very disciplined and a workaholic. He took his role as the head of the household very seriously. The closer he got to retirement he began to soften and show more affection. He cherished his grandchildren and suprised us by engaging them in sillyness. In the end, he was the one that pulled us close to his face to kiss us goodbye before passing on last year. I was blessed to have experience this. My husband is also a hard-worker and very disciplined, but I'm fortunate that on occasion he will roll over and simply say, just hold me...and I do. Treasured moments.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and important perspective, MissOlive

Beautiful, awesome. Like missolive says, the prologue is touching and fitting. And then we get to the poem, which is so well done! Loved reading this beautiful piece this morning. Way to go. Loved it! Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and SHARING!
What a great poem! I love the rhythm and the way it flows. I especially love the metaphor: "let me bask here in your smile" Beautiful! Voting up.
It is just so beautiful. You brought the little scared baby out of man's heart who show off to be brave. This is very true and sweet the way you expressed it. Most of the peoples who show that they are strong and stubborn are actually sensitive from inside. Lovely poem. I guess it can be a good song :)
Wao! this is simply awesome. I am thrilled.
Loved this piece, its important for men to know that they are allowed to crumble, that it doesn't make them less of a man, infact it makes them human like any other. Thanks for sharing this.
This is a beautiful poem. Voted up!
Hi Poetic Fool
Beautiful, tender filled with tenderness and vulnerability. I found it very moving.
Voted up and away!
It is beautiful work and you are no fool. So many need this kind of moment.
Thanks Poetic Fool for letting us as men be real in your verse and maybe then we can be real period.
This was such a great poem and so fitting for the month of love, I had to feature it in my latest hub luv hub! Great job!
You made me cry :)

Such a tender write--and I loved the introduction to your poem--it made the poem so much more meaningful--I think in some ways, your piece is the companion to mine today--
You too! Sharing your piece!

great work. i love the strong rhymes and specific images
It is awesome that you expressed that men are no different inside. We have emotions and feelings but frequently fail to show them. It is good when a man can share like this.

Graceful, resplendent, beautiful, lovely, moving...I could go on but I think you get the idea. This is the type of poetry I would love to write. Absolutely Brilliant. Voted up, beautiful and SHARED.
This is a warm and touching poem. A gentle acknowledgement that every human needs comfort and validation to feel truly loved and appreciated. A powerful reminder to us of the gift of embrace. Thank you. Up and "beautiful."
Really good and I am somehow amazed how I have missed you this long. It is so good to really mean what you say to a writer and it is impossible for me to say it to those absolutely no good. I see some people throw pretty words in a hub and they say nothing yet 50 people might say,"How beautiful" That always baffles me.
Thank you. Reading you just makes me want to write and I really need that.
Lovely poem, we all need encouragement and restoration at times. I so identify with everything you said about your father. My father was an Air Force NCO and before that he was a Polish immigrant who came to America as a young boy fleeing both Hitler and the Soviets. Needless to say, he was tough as nails and saw no reason why we shouldn't be as well. It was not until he was in his 70;s that he softened and became emotional about his family and his past.
Poetic Fool,
I just had to return to tell you don't forget to frame this poem. You might sell it to American Greetings--just a thought. Do you have a book of poems? Women just poems about being treated in such a thoughful loving manner.
Good Luck!
Bobbi
This is a very beautiful poem, Poetic Fool! Its not everyday a man will express the way he is feeling, I can only hope to find a man that will do so with me and know that he doesn't always have to walk that road alone, I would gladly walk it with him.
Loved every word of this hub! Voted up!
It must be very difficult to be a man and find the balance from the tough-macho look to the softer and more sensitive kind. Men has feelings and emotions, that sometimes get overlooked. However, men need to feel true love and tenderness, as much as women. Fantastic hub and your poem was very touching and gentle. Simply beautiful!
Poetic Fool,
Although you published this hub a few weeks ago, I have just discovered it today.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE ~ this hub.

Amazing poem, and introduction as well... I admire your gumption and honesty. Beautiful poem, voted as such.
This was so gentle and loving! Amazing in so many ways. I do believe men may not always show their emotions but deep inside they always need that tender care.
Thank you
