A Small Collection of Romantic Quatrains

A quatrain is a stanza or poem with four lines and a rhyme scheme. A quatrain is only one verse, while a quatrain poem can contain any number of quatrains or stanzas. Quatrains have been found in the poetic traditions of various ancient civilizations including Greece, Rome, and China. The popularity of quatrains continue today, where they're are seen in works published in many languages around the world. Here is a great example of a romantic quatrain by Cavalier poet, Robert Herrick:

To Julia

Julia, when thy Herrick dies,
Close thou up thy poet’s eyes;
And his last breath, let it be
Taken in by none but thee.

Here is a small collection of romantic quatrains I have written. I've chosen to publish them as quatrains rather than integrate them into longer poems because they were randomly inspired thoughts that occurred in real life. Rather than coerce them into a longer form, where I feared they might lose some of their sincerity, I opted to write them as I thought them. They are simply snippets, snapshots of life and are best shared that way. I hope you enjoy them.

Oh, How I Love

Oh, how I love the taste of her lips
the small of her back, the curve of her hips
the shape of her breasts, the bend of her knee
things that are always, only for me

She Lies

She lies here beside me
what beauty do I see
the tender curves of her form
are much too much for me!

Gentleness

As butterfly wings
kiss air gently
the words of my love
alight so on me

My Wish to Die

At no other place am I ever so blessed
than resting my head upon your sweet breast
and if the choice were left up to me
from there I would slip into eternity

Her Eyes

Her eyes I know see into me
seeing much more than others do see
and with love, compassionately
seeing the man that I can be

Sweet Morning Sigh

In her eyes reflect
the virgin morning sky
her contentment is betrayed
in a soft and lilting sigh

Her Lips

Her lips do invite
and so beckon me
to kiss is delight
to miss, misery

Thanks so much, Nikki, I appreciate your kind comments. This kind of poetry isn't everyone's cup of tea but I've grown quite fond of it after reading a number of Robert Herrick's. Thanks again!

that was a lovely poem as well. I like all kinds of poetry as long as it is well written and romantic

Well, I've been told I am an incurable romantic. I don't know if it is true so there you have it. Most of my poetry does fall into that genre, though.

....now this is the real stuff - pure poetry by a pure and honorable writer - and I have learned a new word today - quatrain - always try to learn a new one everyday - I prefer this set up over the haiku format - one more line seems to make all of the difference in the world dosen't it ....... lake erie time ontario canada 1:39pm

Thanks, so much epi and glad you learned something new. One of these days I will try my hand at haiku but I fear it has too many rules for me. What you say is true, I usually need the fourth line! Thanks for reading, Colin!
